The History of the Butt Plug

The History of the Butt Plug

Ever heard the saying “Anything’s a butt plug if you’re brave enough?”. Yeah a word of advice from all of us, just don’t.

Anal sex/play is till date classified as “sexually risky” behavior. Anuses are delicate and no matter how much foreplay you get into, they’re incapable of producing enough lubrication for any kind of play.

Throughout the years, as we have grown as a civilisation, we’ve experimented and invented safe methods to truly enjoy pleasure in all its forms.

The same goes for anal play as well.

A very popular sex toy for the ones that are a fan of the good old anus is the butt plug. Butt plugs can be enjoyed by anyone with an anus, regardless of gender, genitalia, or sexual orientation.

They’re often shaped like a teardrop and have a wide base that prevents them from getting sucked into your bowels forever (no one wants that now, right?).

Butt plugs are used for a variety of different purposes, although they each have a common goal - pleasure. They can be used to achieve anal orgasms (yes that’s real), explore the kinky side of your personality, and even for stretching out the anal cavity to accommodate something larger in size like bigger toys or a penis.

But at what point in our glorious search for pleasure did we invent the butt plug? Who came up with the idea? And most importantly, how?

Crazy as it may seem, the butt plug wasn’t originally invented as a tool for exploring pleasure. A deep dive into the history of the toy shows us that the first trace of butt plugs being sold came in the late 1800’s.

Doctor Young's Rectal Dilator's Artboard

They were sold under the name ‘Dr Young’s Ideal Rectal Dilators’ and were used as a miracle cure to treat everything from headaches and acne to insomnia and bad breath! Before we go any further it’s important to let you know that eventually people realised the dilators couldn’t cure any of the above.

Back then in the 1890’s, most forms of anal intercourse were strictly illegal under sodomy laws. Therefore Dr. Young prescribed his “Rectal Dilators” for medical purposes only and not anything else.

The instructions that came with the dilators told users – who were encouraged to self-prescribe and administer – to begin with the smaller dilator and work their way up to the bigger sizes. The packaging also noted that they should not be used by anyone under the age of 8, without doctor supervision.

Doctor Young's Rectal Dilators Wall Flyers

Initially, Dr. Young sold these dilators with the promise that they would help with defecation by "strengthening and toning the muscles controlling defecation", and were mainly marketed as a tool for relieving constipation.

The benefits eventually started getting wilder and wilder, with Dr Young eventually recommending the devices as a cure for insanity in a medical journal, insisting that it could cure 75% of people considered insane “in a few weeks’ time” (seriously Doctor, seriously?)

Doctor Young's Rectal Dilator Box

These claims were far from the medical truth, and the Government put a stop to it with 1938’s Federal Food, Drugs and Cosmetics Act which introduced regulation for the first time in the industry of “magic butt plugs”.

Two years later, in 1940, Dr Young’s Ideal Rectal Dilators were banned outright where the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruled that the claims were not backed by evidence and the device "would be dangerous to health when used with the frequency and duration prescribed, recommended, or suggested in the labeling."

Fast forward to the late 20th century where “Rectal Dilators” made a comeback, but this time in the form of a sex toy called “Butt Plugs” and have ever since then been used for all things related to Anal pleasure!
